     If you have not seen the movie Fight Club this won’t make any sense to you. But if you have, and you have also seen Ferris Bueller’s day off, then prepare to have your mind blown. I read a theory online about the movie Ferris Bueller’s day off and how Ferris does not exist at all. He is a figment of his friend Cameron’s imagination. He is sick and is boring, as in Fight Club, the main character is lonely and boring. Both encounter a crazy edgy character who they are best friends with. One thing that both movies have in common is the non existing guy talks directly to the camera. This is a big rule broken in film making but it is a way of showing how this character is above and beyond the movie and thinks for themselves. Both explicitly convey messages directed to the audience at various periods of the movies and both movies have a theme of “letting go” and “having fun”.

     As my friend described, both come to grips with things when they encounter a car crash. When the main character in Fight Club gets into a car accident (caused by Tyler Durden because he said he was too tense), Tyler disappears until the main character gets a grip on reality. Same happens to Cameron. Ferris says that Cameron is so tense that “if you stuck a lump of coal up his @$$, you would have a diamond in a few hours”. Ferris yells at Cameron to just relax but then Cameron accidentally kicks the car out the window. He has a moment where he is so afraid of his Dad, he doesn’t even feel threatened anymore and he gets a grip on reality and realizes how much fun the day was.

     In both accounts, a car is involved; but more importantly, the character goes through a life changing moment and really sees the world the way it is. There is no way the director could have planned this in Ferris Bueller’s day off but it is fun to analyze movies to make better sense of them and ultimately, make the movie better. I love hearing about these things. For example, in the James Bond series, there are many different actors who tend to give James Bond a different attitude/personality. But a way around that is to imagine that “James Bond” is a code name. each agent is a different person, yet they play the role of an agent called James Bond.
